Alice in Wonderland

I've just finished this book, and liked it a lot better the second time around. The first encounter I had with Lewis Carroll was very frustrating (it was during high school). I was convinced that it must have a meaning, a buried symbolism that I couldn't decipher. So the whole time I was reading Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass I was in despair at not being able to solve the riddle.

However, this time was much more enjoyable since I decided to let the story just speak to me and let the professor enlighten me afterwords. It is still not my favorite children's book, but it is a great example of how an author can portray childhood and whimsy even to the adult who has, perhaps, forgotten what it is like to explore and dream.

I quite liked many of the bits in Through the Looking Glass and I thought I'd share them with you, reader.

One comes when Alice is winding a skein of yarn with a kitten of Dina's:

Kitty sat very demurely on her knee, pretending to watch the progress of the winding, and now and then putting out one paw and gently touching the ball, as if it would be glad to help, if it might.

Another when describing the play of Alice:

I wish I could tell you half the things Alice used to say, beginning with her favourite phrase 'Let's pretend.' . . . once she had really frightened her old nurse by shouting suddenly in her ear, 'Nurse! Do let's pretend that I'm a hungry hyaena, and you're a bone.'

A dialogue on being scared:

The King was saying, 'I assure, you my dear, I turned cold to the very ends of my whiskers!'

To which the Queen replied, 'You haven't got any whiskers.'

'The horror of that moment,' the King went on, 'I shall never, NEVER forget!'

'You will, though,' the Queen said, 'if you don't make a memorandum of it.'

Ok, so I'm a busy student who loves to get free stuff. I use MyPoints, Swagbucks, and Daily Feats to help 'redeem' some of the time I spend online. However, not all 'rewards' are the same. For this post I'll look at what rewards are worth cashing in and which ones you should leave behind on Daily Feats.
Daily Feats is one of my favorite internet sites period. It is a platform that lets you check in when you do everyday good deeds, habits, and self-care activities. For each check in you get points that you can cash in for gift cards locally and online. I also like that you can help support others trying to develop habits of their own, and receive support too.

This is a reminder to spend just five minutes clearing a path in your worst room. You know this area of your home: the place you would never allow anyone to see. Just five minutes a day for the next 27 days, and you will have a place that you can be proud to take anyone!

If you can't think of anything to do after your room is clean...you can clean out your backpack, take out the trash, change your sheets, wash the dirty dishes, do a cleaning duty for your hall (or if one isn't required at your school just go in and wipe down the sinks with a paper towel to bless your hallmates).

This site shows ingenious creative individuals and their projects to the world. They ask for small donations to "kick start" their project, and in return you get gifts from them. I really like the site and you should definitively check it out!

The project in this video really stood out to me. It use the imput of the communtiy (which is essential in any project that affects that community) to decide where urban development should happen. It also uses inspiring pictures to show the community abandoned building's potential. The project seems like the perfect blend of art and activism.

Fly Lady College Style- Day 1

Today is day one. One of Fly Lady's biggest things is "shining your sink" every day, but there is one small problem for college students--we don't have a sink. So I'm changing this to "make your bed." This fits with Fly Lady's goal of shining the sink. She says:

This is your first household chore. Many of you can’t understand why I want you to empty your sink of your dirty dishes and clean and shine it when there is so much more to do. It is so simple; I want you to have a sense of accomplishment! You have struggled for years with a cluttered home and you are so beaten down. I just want to put a smile on your face. When you get up the next morning, your sink will greet you, and a smile will come across your lovely face. I can’t be there to give you a big hug, but I know how good it feels to see yourself in your kitchen sink. So each morning, this is my gift to you. New Year Tools

While surfing the net I've found some awesome tools for productivity and fun. What better time to share them than on New Year's Day when everyone is making their resolutions? Here we go, my top eight tools for 2012:

1. Chrome http://www.google.com

I know what you are thinking: "What does an internet browser have to do with productivity? Big Whoop Amelia!" But wait, there's more! Chrome has this thing called an online store that you can access when you click to open a new tab. This store adds "apps" (like those on a smartphone or tablet) to your internet browser. How cool is that? Really cool. This is where I've found a lot of the tools for this post, and I love how CLEAN Chrome is. No icky clunky search bars, or pop ups, just clean internet browsing.

2. Email Game http://emailga.me/

This little guy has changed my life (well at least the way I read/file/explore/piddle with my email). This "game" syncs with your Gmail account to pull up all of your emails with just the content of the message. No, borders, adds, etc. Then it gives you a timer to help keep emails reading under control. You try to beat the clock by choosing to delete, archive, file, or boomerang (have the game resend you the email at a specific time like: one day, one hour, one month from now) each email. When you do 30 you get a score and it tells you how much time you saved.

3. Fly Lady http://www.flylady.net

Fly Lady is a way of habit forming that specifically is geared towards those who procrastinate, are perfectionist, or cluttered. It is a really great system and my New Year's resolution is to complete the 31 Baby Steps.

4. Cozi Calender http://www.cozi.com

This is an online calendar that can't be beat. It has shopping lists, to do lists, a calendar that can be synced to Google, and more. My favorite features are the weekly digest of your schedule, the text message alerts, and the customized notifications to different members of your family. The mobile apps are amazing too (Blackberry, Apple, and Android).

5. StayFocused via the Google Chrome Web Store (it's free)

StayFocusd increases your productivity by limiting the amount of time that you can spend on time-wasting websites. It does this by asking which sites you want to block after a certain amount of time. There are a lot of customizable options so go check it out!

6. Pinterest http://www.pinterest.com

Amazing clipper tool. You can organize any image from anywhere on the net. While this can be anti-productive you can use it to store recipes, inspiration, diet photos, shopping lists, etc. If you become really addicted add it to your StayFocused account. Remember to add me using the button on the sidebar.

7. Sleep Bot https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lslk.sleepbot&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5sc2xrLnNsZWVwYm90Il0

This app is a great one for getting in your sleep for the day. It logs your sleep patterns and keeps track of how much sleep you need at any given time. I couple it the BedTime calculator for a great app. An online version is coming soon!

I have been using this app for awhile and highly recommend it. It lets you enter Prof's phone numbers, emails, and class times for individual days. It also has a automatic GPA calculator.

A few months ago I received a wonderful package of goodies from Katz Gluten Free. They sent me the food so I could write a review for them.* My family does not have any gluten allergies, but the treats looked so good we offered to review them. All in all we loved them. Our favorites were the vanilla rugelech, marble cake, and the chocolate chip cookies. The honey muffins were the only thing that tasted a bit bland and "health foodie." The cake was simply scrumptious, with a slight taste of coffee and a fairly smooth texture my family found this to be the most like "gluten packed foods." The cookies were some of my favorites as they tasted like Chips Ahoy brand. I would definitely order form Katz again, esp. to give the yummy desserts to my friend who does have gluten allergies.
Even for someone who likes "real" baked goods these are a great healthy (lower carb/sugar) option! In fact, the nutrition of all of the products amazed me. My Mom who eats low carb was able to eat cookies again, and I was able to have guilt free cake! The site has detailed nutrition for every item. Be sure to take advantage of their free samples (they'll send you a generous package of treats right to your door for only the cost of shipping).

I went to see this yesterday and was especially pleased all over again. Emma Thompson has done it again; she's written, produced, and stared in another wonderful movie. What I love about these films is that they are all about bringing families together (whether divorced or coping with war or death). (Oh and the fact that they are absolute eye candy!) 10 out of 10! We have to support the clean, family films that are quality. I don't like when whole groups (church, homeschool group, friends) go out to "support" a movie that is poor quality. I love it that they are supporting moral movies, but if Christians (esp.) keep settling for medicore art when are the artists going to find the need to create true beauty?
If you haven't seen the first one then please, please, please go rent it.

I love this video...I've gotten so many great clothes at a consignment shops. FIY a consignment shop only sells name brand clothes, whereas a thrift store sells any donated clothes. Consignment shops offer a way to support SAHM (who get a percentage of the profits from the clothes they sell), local business, and other thrifty people who sell their clothes to the shop.

The end of summer is so close, but I don't feel all that sad. I've always kind of looked forward to starting a new year. I've got my folders and pens (you are never too old to buy school supplies). I'm learning how to save money online. I've grown closer to God by reading my Bible more consistently, and I've got all my bloggy and twitter friends to get to know. So all in all summer can go, I'll let it this year and try not to pout too much when I'm under 3 feet of snow and ice.
